Pink Elephant Review
I went to art exhibit at the Shepard Gallery at UNR called “Pink Elephant on Parade” The show was mostly about the weird and out of place that people would not normally see and how people would see things when in a sleep state. I thought it was an interesting take on it and to be honest I thought it was making fun of Dumbo since his shows title was based on Dumbo’s drunken scene when he was seeing the “Pink Elephants on Parade.” One work I saw was this chair made up of different layers of material mostly sand, kitty litter, and by the looks moon sand.  Most of the work I saw there were interesting and fit the out of the norm side of things my favorite piece I saw was a statue covered in this goop type substance and it looks like he is struggling to be free from it. To me I felt this was a strong piece because interoperate it as a struggle to get out of a nightmare whether it’s in a dream or dealing with life.
Overall I thought the exhibit was an interesting take and the title match with theme of the exhibit. Even though there were no pink elephants.

Tehching Hsieh Show review
I went to see Tehching Hsieh artist show “One Year.” After I went to his artist talk I went to see his show and I have to say I was impressed and also shock on his project. Most of Tehching project involving doing something for an entire year. His first project was him in a jail cell for a year with nothing much to do. His next one is him punching a time clock for an entire year on the hour by the hour. Then his next one was to spend a year outside without going into buildings, caves, etc. Then his next one was being tied to someone for a year, and then his last projects were to not talk or do anything related to art for 13 years. While I commend Tehching for having the patients of a saint, I could not see myself doing any of these projects. While I understand that all of his projects involving time and how people waste them like in the work force or other. To me I felt this was driving me insane and would quit within a week. But again I commend him for doing this project. I love his works when I saw the show and was impressed on how he represents what he was aiming for. Below are picture of me at the show.

Tehching Hsieh-One Year Performances
I went to see Tehching Hsieh lecture about his life works “One year performances”. It was quite intriguing to listen to his lecture and show us his works. Most of his works took over a year to do. The first work he showed was his one year in a “jail” cell.  He talked about how he made a little path with in the cell and described it as “a path to work and his bed was home.” He kept makings on the walls to keep tabs on what day it was. His “Time Clock” piece was the most interested one.  The piece was that he had to clock every hour on the hour for one year. So doing the math, (365 days x 24 hours) equals about 8,760 times he punched the time clock. Holy cow that is insanity. However I felt like that piece was very powerful. How people spent their time going through the same thing over and over and over again in their life. It was also interesting that Tehching talked about time and how valuable it we must use our time. I completely agree with his statement. Time is very important to everyone’s life and must be used wisely.  The rest of his lecture was pretty well done too. His outdoors piece was well done too along with his rope piece where he and one other person were tied together for a whole year and must do everything together. I could never do that because I love having my own space and my own piece of mind.
Overall I feel this lecture was great and something to take away from.

Artist Talk

Clint Sleeper
I went to Clint Sleeper’s artist talk and I must say some of the works I never seen were interesting. Most of his works either deals with capitalism and space. I like how he talk about for certain project that he made benches and swings and put them at certain places like billboard or the benches at university spaces. I loved how he mentions that the university asks him to make more benches for free without paying him. That was funny but that the same time he mentions how that was not great which I can understand because unless he was being paid to do this, I would not be happy either. Another thing I like from his artist talked was that he went around and repaired certain parts of a town like benches with his own money and yet he gets no recognizes or the fact the it’s the CITY’s responsibility to repair public spots/spaces.
Still I liked the projects he showed and I like how in-depth he went into why these projects are a reflection to public space and capitalism

Dada Talk

Dada Talk & Show Review

So the artist talk for the Dada show was a bit interesting and a bit off. I heard the talks from the artists who did the rug picture, the donkey head, and I do believe the Twinkie piece. While Dada does mean nothing but mean something at the same time, I felt the artists were trying to make sense of their piece. The Donkey Head artist talked about how she wore the head at certain times  to represent the odd sense of out of place or when she wears it at places that were demising. As I listen to her talking I felt like I can almost understand what she was talking about, but something told me that it probably meant nothing.  The artists that talked about their picture rug was kind of interesting. When I looked at it it looked like something that you would have laying around your house as a decorations, however when the artists talked about the rug, they said it was a way for people to expresses their family's likes and their history. I never really read that, again Dada mean nothing but at the same time it does. The Twinkie piece artist talked about the love cream since the piece had a heart shape in the middle. Overall I felt the talks weren't as I thought they were, but it was entertaining to hear what the artist process was when they their work.

Photography and Accident Response

Photography and Accident Response

After reading the "Notes on Photography & Accident" by Moyra Davey this was an article I felt a bit confused on. Throughout the whole article, she talked about other events about her life while talking about the accidental photo. I actually based my final project on this article because I found it to be a complex thought process and to also try to find that accidental photo myself. While I didn't have no success, I figured that it was not going to be that easy let along it something you have to final natural with no thought process. The article also talked about how for some photos that we take, we don't really take pictures of things we normally don't take like graphite, destroyed landscapes, or something that is unpleasant. Also for some photos, they Photoshop out the unpleasantries like an ugly building or something along those lines. With my project, I decided to take photos based on a random system, no matter what I take photos of, it was all based on a random system.  Still trying to read this article, I felt I didn't fully understand what the whole meaning behind the article was about, just bits and pieces. Still in was an intriguing article to read and it was a fun project to do based on this said reading.

Society of the Spectacle

Society of the Spectacle

So after reading this article, I feel that it has a lot of interesting points and it does bring up a lot of good points when it comes art, society, and criticisms of the modern time. I felt that when it talk about how some change it becomes increasing difficult for an issue to be heard of because it is drown out but other nonsense to shut it down.  I also like the points it makes about capitalist civilizations and how it can interpret everyday life. One thing that confused me was the criticism side of modern society. I wasn't sure if they are against how people criticize the modern style of society or the fact that critiquing art that the modern standards is making it difficult for art to be recognized by its own demeter and not by the societies considers art. Everyday life was talked about here and I thought about what it said about how the concept of "everyday life" and you sometimes have to pull yourself away from everyday life to see the full picture of what is going on around you and where you live.  For me this article does bring good points up on how people are changing how they view art or how it is being influenced on how people are viewing art in the society they live in. Also with the capitalistic and other organization create a way for either people to view art or what are is being viewed to the public. Maybe I am interpreting this all wrong.
